Question

Can my child be a transmasc but still want to wear feminine clothes?

Answer

Yes absolutely. Your child can be transmasc (meaning they identify more with masculinity or as male) and still enjoy wearing feminine clothes. Gender identity and gender expression are two separate things. Identity is about how someone understands themselves internally, while expression is how they choose to present themselves outwardly through clothing, style and behaviour.

For many young people, especially those exploring their gender, clothing is a form of creativity and comfort, rather than a strict reflection of identity. A transmasc child might feel happiest identifying as male or leaning masculine, while still enjoying skirts, makeup or other traditionally ‘feminine’ items. That doesn’t make their identity any less real or valid.

What matters most is how your child feels inside, and that they are able to express themselves safely and authentically. When parents respond with kindness, curiosity and support, it helps young people build confidence and a strong sense of self.

It’s okay if this feels confusing at first – that’s very normal. You don’t need to understand everything immediately to be supportive. Simply listening, respecting your child’s feelings and giving them room to explore who they are can make a powerful difference.

Your care and willingness to understand already mean so much.
