Building a better understanding and relationship with your trans son is a journey rooted in love, patience and openness. You don’t have to have all the answers right away. What matters most is your willingness to be open and stay connected.
Start by listening. Let him share his experiences and feelings at his own pace and try to hear him without judgment or urgency to fix anything. Using his name and pronouns consistently is a powerful way to show respect and affirmation.
You might say something like: “I may not fully understand everything yet, but I love you deeply and I want to understand fully. Thank you for trusting me with who you are. I’m here to listen, to learn and to grow alongside you.”
Give yourself time and care. It’s normal to need time to adjust. Small efforts, honesty and showing up consistently will help build trust. Over time, your relationship can grow even stronger, grounded in authenticity and mutual respect.
