Answer
Supporting a child as they navigate their gender identity begins with creating a safe, loving and accepting environment. Young people can find themselves and develop in their truest sense when they feel listened to and respected. Encourage open conversations and allow them to express their thoughts, feelings and experiences in their own time and words.
It is important to validate a child’s feelings, even if they are still exploring or questioning their identity. Allow them time to questions and find themselves, without pressure to define themselves. This may be tricky for you as a parent, but if they can see you trying and doing yours best – that will mean a huge amount to them.
Doing some research and finding information for yourself around gen can help you better understand the challenges they might face, taking the responsibility form the young person and can help you to respond from a place of knowledge and greater confidence.
Finally, remember that every child’s journey is unique. There is no one way to approach supporting your child through this journey. However, staying open, patient and simply trying your best will mean they know they have the support to find themselves in their time.
