What does Bi Visibility Day mean to you?

Bisexual Visibility Day is important to me because it shines a light on an often forgotten and misunderstood segment of the LGBTQIA+ community. This day provides validation to those who may not feel “queer enough”, raises awareness of the challenges Bi+ people face and celebrates our contributions to the community and society.

Tell us about the piece you’ve created for Bi Visibility Day

I chose a hydrangea as the subject for this painting, not only because the flowers come in the colours of the Bisexual flag, but also because the colours of the flowers are not fixed, they change depending on their environment. This reflects the fluid nature of sexuality that many Bi+ people experience.

What do you hope LGBTQ+ young people will take from this piece?

I hope this piece helps young queer people see their identity as being natural and beautiful and spreads a message of joy and celebration.

Do you think art can bring communities together?

I think art is wonderful at bringing communities together. It can bring attention to issues in way that words may not be able to, it can create shared meanings and understanding within a group and communities can come together to create their own joint art projects. My local Pride organisation holds a monthly “Art Club” where members bring their own projects to work on but in a lovely community environment.

How do you use your art to share positive messages of hope?

I was late diagnosed as autistic at age 29 and since then I have been on a journey of unmasking and fully embracing my queer and neurodivergent identities, sharing the journey through my platforms. Autistic and queer joy plays a huge part in my art and my creative process.
