Question

Can being trans change or be a "phase" like a tomboy?

Answer

A trans or queer identity can look different for each person, and there is no single path that everyone follows. Some children and young people know their identity from an early age and continue to feel the same way throughout their lives. Others may spend time exploring different aspects of their identity before finding the language or understanding that feels right for them.

It is important not to dismiss a child’s feelings as “just a phase.” Exploration is a normal and healthy part of development for many young people. Whether a child later identifies as transgender, queer, cisgender or something else, their feelings and experiences at that moment are genuine. Supporting exploration does not force any particular outcome, it simply gives children the space to understand themselves better and time to find out who they are.

Terms such as “tomboy” describe interests, behaviours or styles that do not always fit traditional gender expectations, while gender identity relates to a person’s internal sense of who they are. Although these experiences can sometimes overlap, they are not the same thing.

The most helpful response is one of openness, curiosity and unconditional support. By listening, affirming feelings and allowing children the freedom to grow and discover who they are, adults help build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging, regardless of where their journey leads.
