Answer
Supporting an LGBTQ+ child begins with love, acceptance and open communication. Children thrive when they know they are loved and valued for who they are, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Listen to your child openly and with respect about how they identify, and reassure them that your love and support are unconditional.
Taking the time to inform yourself about LGBTQ+ experiences can also help you better understand them, the challenges they may face and enable you to advocate for them effectively.
Building a supportive community around your child is equally important. Encourage connections with accepting family members, friends, teachers and other trusted people in yours and their lives who will celebrate and respect your child’s identity. LGBTQ+ youth groups, like the groups we provide in Belong To and other groups across the country can provide valuable opportunities for your child to meet peers with similar experiences and feel less isolated.
Research shows that joining LGBTQ+ groups is one of the most effective protective factors for LGBTQ+ youth’s wellbeing.
Ultimately, a strong support network, combined with unconditional family love, can significantly improve an LGBTQ+ child’s wellbeing, self-esteem, and sense of belonging today and well into their future.
Getting touch shows you’re already doing a lot to support your young person – so well done. Your child is lucky to have you.
