Question

How does my daughter find other lesbians and enjoy teenage experiences like crushes and girlfriends and learn how to look after herself?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch – and it’s clear you love your daughter deeply, to get in touch for advice like this and being so open.

A teenager who is discovering that she is lesbian can still enjoy all the normal experiences of adolescence, including friendships, crushes, first relationships and learning independence. One of the best ways for her to meet other LGBTQ+ young people is through safe, age-appropriate groups, youth clubs and community organisations.

It is important that she knows she is not alone. Encouraging her to be open, at her own pace, with trusted friends can help her build a supportive social network. Spending time in inclusive environments increases the chance of meeting other girls who share similar experiences and interests.

Learning to look after herself involves more than dating. She should be encouraged to develop self-confidence, set personal boundaries, recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships and communicate honestly. Understanding consent, respect and emotional wellbeing are important skills for every teenager, regardless of sexual orientation.

As a parent, the most valuable thing you can offer is acceptance and a listening ear. When young people feel supported at home, they are generally better equipped to navigate relationships, deal with disappointment and enjoy positive teenage experiences. Knowing that her family accepts her can give her the confidence to explore who she is and build healthy, happy relationships.
