Thank you for this question. We know that today in Ireland, the most common age a young person knows they are LGBTQ+ is 12 and the most common age a person shares that information with someone is 14. This learning came from research that was launched in 2024 in Ireland called Being LGBTQI+ in Ireland.
We also know from working with young people and families that people can know and come out earlier than age 12, especially if the young person is trans.
It is important to believe your young person when they come out and to encourage open communication on the topic.
