Question

My child (girl) is a Demigirl. What supports are available?

Answer

Thanks for your question. Demigirl falls under a broad spectrum of gender identities, specifically someone who partially identifies as a woman or girl but not fully. This is a non-binary identity that has a partial connection to a certain gender. So, for example, for your child, Demigirl is a gender identity that is both female and genderless.

There are a number of supports available to you and your child. Firstly, there are LGBTQ+ youth groups all across Ireland. These groups are spaces for young people to meet their peers who have common interests, get support and belong. You can find details on groups on our interactive National Network map here: https://www.belongto.org/find-a-youth-group/. A youth group would be a great place for your child to find others who are LGBTQ+ and feel connected to a community.

As a parent, you could read our resource ‘Coming Out – A Guide for Parents and Carers’ which can be found on our website: https://www.belongto.org/support-for-someone-else/at-home/advice-for-family-members/. This has some practical suggestions on how to support your young person. For further support, you are always welcome to contact our Family Support Service here at Belong To, and the team will be happy to provide you with support online or face-to-face.

Your child has probably come to terms with their sexual orientation or gender identity and felt comfortable enough about it to ‘come out’ to you. Now it’s your turn to deal with this the best way you can, and Belong To is here to support you.
