Thank you for reaching out. It is great that your daughter was able to share this information with you. Coming out is a big step, and she will really benefit from your support.
It sounds like you’re carrying a lot on your shoulders right now – trying to support your child around their sexuality, while also managing your child’s father’s reaction.
Coming to terms with a child coming out can be difficult for parents, and all feelings are valid. What often helps in situations like this is maintaining a calm, open space for your child, while also giving your child’s father time to process his own feelings.
Many parents need space to adjust, even if they’re not able to show support immediately. You’re already doing something incredibly important by being there for your child, and that steady presence will make a huge difference as your family works through this together.
We have in-person events coming up in Cork and Dublin which could be a good space for your child’s father to meet other parents in similar positions and ask questions. If he is not ready for this, you can also arrange a phone call or meeting with our family support officer who can answer any questions or concerns he might have.
I’ve included some resources which I suggest you read to help you on this new journey.
