Question

My transgender child who now identifies as a boy refuse to wear dresses. Why?

Answer

Thank you for getting in touch. It’s great that your young person feels comfortable enough to share with you that they are transgender. Exploring gender is a deeply personal and individual journey for any young person – and for adults too. They may still be working through who they are and how they want to express their gender. This process can take time, and they may need space to understand what feels right for them and what support they need from loved ones around them.

Continuing to create a safe, open space for them to talk and express what they need will be increasingly important.

Creating an environment where they can have honest conversation with you, without fear of judgement, will make a big difference. When your child feels safe talking openly about their gender identity, it also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of how they’re feeling and what support they might need.

Part of their journey coming to terms with their gender identity and expression can include what clothes they may or may not want to wear. It is important to listen to what they feel comfortable with so that your young person can feel seen, heard and accepted at home. Feeling validated can have a hugely positive impact on their mental health and sense of self for the rest of their lives.

It is completely normal to feel a range of emotions when supporting your child through their journey. Remember the journey is not linear for many families, so give yourself time to come to terms with the situation, and while you do that be mindful that your child needs support now more than ever.

I’ve included some resources which might be helpful on this new journey.
