What we’ll cover:

Part 1: Understanding Identities and Why It Matters

We will set the stage by understanding why parental support is so crucial and introduce key concepts clearly. Learn the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and affirm that being LGBTQ+ is not a choice.

Part 2: Navigating the Challenges

Gain insight into the unique difficulties and risks facing LGBTQ+ young people today, including bullying, social isolation and elevated mental health pressures like anxiety and depression. Understanding these challenges is the first step toward effective advocacy.

Part 3: Practical Communication and Immediate Support

Prepare for the milestone moment of ‘coming out’. Learn strategies like taking a deep breath and listening, and how to offer the most important reassurance: “I Love You No Matter What”. We’ll also cover what hurtful or harmful responses to avoid and how to create a safe environment if your child hasn’t come out yet.

Part 4: Long-Term Advocacy, Self-Care and Resources

Parenting is hard work, and there is no training! Learn how to support yourself first—remember to “Tend to your own air mask first!!!”. We will discuss the ongoing work of respecting transitioning steps, advocating for inclusion in schools, and connecting you with vital Irish support networks like Belong To, LGBT Ireland and TENI.
